Those who have read our Samsung Galaxy Note 5 review know we fell in love with the device’s screen-off memo feature. A bit of a recap: you take the S-Pen out while the device is off, and you can start writing on the display as if you’re just writing on a notebook.
It looks like you’re writing on a powered-off display, but what’s really happening is the phone launches an app that has a completely black background. Super AMOLED displays simply shut off individual LEDs to display pure black, so it makes it look like you’re writing on a display that’s been shut off. Neato!
And now you can get it on your older Note devices if you aren’t interested in upgrading to a Note 5. The work was done by one astute XDA member who was able to port it to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The app also apparently works just fine on a Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge or S6 Edge Plus, but as you know those phones don’t have S-Pens so there’s no way to automatically launch the app without turning the display on.
You can find downloads and instructions right here. Be sure to give it a try and let us know how you’re liking it!
