Samsung is continuing to test Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 inside the Samsung Galaxy S7, and things are looking quite good. A new prototype using an updated version of the Snapdragon 820 — which is being referred to as 820-B vs the previous 820-A revision — has popped up in benchmarks.
Said benchmarks show that the new prototype is performing even better than before, with 1.38x improvement in single-threaded integer and 1.77x improvement in floating point operations. This doesn’t sound like much to an end user like yourself, but that’s a big deal for machine code, and any improvement should make you happy.
Of course, raw performance doesn’t mean much if the chipset can’t remain efficient in areas of heat and battery life. We’re unlikely to see Qualcomm repeat the mistakes they made with the Snapdragon 810 chipset, and if Qualcomm can eventually put together a chipset that makes nice on all the failed promises of the Snapdragon 810 then there’s a high chance Samsung will go with it for their next round of Galaxy flagships.
