You can now officially download Android Pay from the Google Play Store (as long as you’re in the US)
That headline pretty much says it all. After Android Pay was officially announced last Thursday (and we gave you guys a downloadable APK), only today is the app now officially available to everyone in the Google Play Store. Well, mostly everyone. Okay, some of you.
You’ll first need to be in the US, have an Android device with NFC (sorry OnePlus 2 owners), be running the latest Google Play Services and Android 4.4+. Even if you meet all those criteria, you still may hit a roadblock. Jumping on to the Play Store listing you’ll find countless 1-star reviews, many of which are from people who aren’t too thrilled that they must have a credit card on file just to access and use loyalty cards. We had a feeling Google would be stepping on a few toes when they replaced the old Google Wallet with Android Pay, but them’s the breaks.
Google also introduced a new Google Wallet app stripped of its tap-to-pay capabilities, now primarily used as a way to send money to folks online. A handful of banks and carriers area already on board with Android Pay, with Citibank being one of the latest to enable support.
