The HTC Vive is one very impressive piece of virtual reality kit. The company is working with Valve to do big things in the VR space, with innovations in object tracking and manipulation being among the biggest ways they’re separating themselves from the likes of the Oculus Rift or the Samsung Gear VR.
Need more proof of that? HTC and Valve approached the Future of StoryTelling, a creative storytelling conference, to hook a legendary Hollywood animator up with an HTC Vive and the 3D drawing app to see what he could do with it.
The result is nothing short of brilliant. Glen Keane, who was the animator responsible for Tarzan, The Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, went to town within a virtual 3D space to draw out some of his beloved characters. The application allowed him to walk around the models and get really detailed and creative with what he was doing.
He uses a remote to easily and accurately draw his lines and contours, and there’s no lag or quirks: it’s smooth, fast and, well, seemingly real. “Real” is exactly what everyone hopes their virtual reality experience feels like, and the early feeling is that HTC and Vive are nailing it.
