Large computer chip on the board

Android Phones with 6GB RAM are coming soon, courtesy of Samsung

Today’s most beastly Android phones – such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 – pack a powerful punch in the memory department with 4GB of RAM. It won’t be long before flagships are sporting 6GB of RAM, though, as Samsung has just announced the industry’s first 12GB LPDDR4 based on its 20-nanometer process technology.

It sounds simple, but consider that this new solution:

That means the upcoming 6GB chipsets could fit in the same space as current 4GB chipsets with better performance and more efficiency:

“In next-generation flagship devices, 6GB of LPDDR4 mobile DRAM will allow consumers to enjoy seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments. Also, based on the new 12Gb LPDDR4, the 6GB package can easily fit into the same space used for 3GB LPDDR4 packages currently available, therefore meeting the need for greater design compatibility and manufacturing productivity in advanced mobile devices.”

Pardon my speculative forward thinking, but that seems to suggest we’ll see a Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy Note 6 with 6GB of RAM. And that’s something I’d welcome with open arms.
