T-Mobile has announced the launch of video calling on their network. It doesn’t sound as cool on its own as it might have 3 years ago, what with the likes of Skype and Hangouts available in Google Play, but it is an easy way for two people to chat without having to deal creating accounts and learning new apps as it all exists within the standard dialer.
It also has the advantage of handling WiFi and LTE hand-offs in a smart way, so if you find yourself walking in and out of WiFi coverage you can continue chatting without any interruptions. For the situations where you can’t get back to an LTE or WiFi connection in time, T-Mobile will automatically convert the video call into a voice call, and you can reinitiate the video call once you’re back under proper coverage.
One of the gotchas with T-Mobile’s video calling is that you can only do it with other T-Mobile customers with compatible video calling phones and conditions. If the person you’re trying to reach can receive a video call they’ll have a video call icon lit up next to their name in your contacts list, alongside the other usual buttons for voice calls and messages. If not, the icon is greyed out. Simple.
Another consideration is that the feature will only be available on select phones, with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus being the first to get the update (which is rolling out right now if you head to the settings menu on your phone). T-Mobile also promises the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be getting the upgrade as soon as next week. Other phones are expected to be added down the line.
