Motorola’s new Moto X Style and Play camera touted as ‘massive upgrade’ over their previous efforts [SAMPLES]

While it’s been said that “the best camera is the one that’s with you,” it certainly helps when your phone is packing some serious photo snapping hardware. As social media evolves, it’s clear that photography is the main ingredient when building a new social platform. Whether it’s Instagram or Snapchat, people love to shoot photos and share them with others. Because the best camera is the one you have in their pocket (and smartphones have almost all but replaced the point-and-shoot), this is often times the key spec consumers look for when upgrading to a new device: it’s gotta be able to take a mean photo.

When it comes to the upcoming Motorola Moto X Style (Pure Edition here in the US) and Moto X Play, Motorola is doing whatever they can to ensure these phones can take a good shot, but not like before. Motorola’s previous flagships have all been sorely lacking in the camera department and this time around there’s no mention of “ClearPixels” or any of that nonsense. In fact, both the camera hardware and software are pretty barebones. You wont find any OIS, or laser assisted auto-focus and the software is still geared toward the mainstream without the manual shooting modes found in most flagships. That’s not to say Motorola skimped with their camera. Quite the contrary. The Moto X Style / X Play use Sony’s all new IMX230 stacked sensor, the first of its kind with phase detection auto-focus. So, how does the camera perform in the real world? Pretty damn good.

The Verge was able to get their hands on the Motorola Moto X Play and after spending some time with the phone’s camera (the same camera as on the Moto X Style), they’re touting it as “a massive upgrade over anything it’s done before.” Sounds promising enough. They didn’t have any comparisons with Android’s other popular flagships, but they did post a handful of sample shots along with 100% crops. We think anyone who’s had their heart set on either device (the Moto X Play will likely be released in the US as the DROID Maxx 2) will be pleased with the results.
