Samsung’s fingerprint scanners will authorize Google Play purchases in Android 6.0 Marshmallow
It was only just yesterday that Google revealed that the next major version of Android would be known as Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We already have a pretty good idea of what’s to come thanks to the Android Developer Preview and Google’s I/O presentation from earlier this year. That said, many manufacturers haven’t yet detailed their plans for Android M, though they typically don’t until they’ve gotten the source code. One big South Korean OEM did have a bit to say, though. Samsung has confirmed that the fingerprint scanners on their phone will enable more functionality than just unlocking your phone or authorizing Paypal payments. You will be able to use the fingerprint scanner to authorize purchases in Google Play, as well.
This is likely thanks to Android 6.0’s built-in fingerprint scanner functionality. We weren’t sure what sort of functionality Google’s new Open Authentication API would bring, but it sounds like they’ve made it easy for manufacturers like Samsung and OnePlus to take advantage of all of Android’s built-in fingerprint features. This would probably be true for Android Pay whenever it’s set to launch, as well (though considering Samsung is trying to push Samsung Pay we aren’t surprised they didn’t mention it).
We’ll probably have to wait a while longer to get more specific details about what Samsung and other OEMs are set to do with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but this is a nice little morsel for the time being. Let us know what you’d want to see.
