Android Desserts vs Tasty Treats [DISCUSS]

Following today’s big reveal that Android M will now be officially known as Android 6.0 Marshmallow (fun fact: 10 years ago today Google quietly acquired Android), Googlers Nat and Lo uploaded a quick behind the scenes featurette to their YouTube channel. In the video, the duo talks with some of the folks on the Android team and even Gio, the man behind the Google’s famous Android lawn sculptures.

While it’s commonly believed that Android’s big software releases were originally named after desserts (Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo) and later evolved into other sugary goods, turns out that was never actually the case. Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer explains that they were always based on “tasty treats.” Apparently Ryan “PC” Gibson is the man responsible for coming up with the idea after the once small team would gorge on junk food — like donut burgers — after long nights of pixel pushing.

So, there you have it. While desserts and “tasty treats” certainly can be related, it may leave open the possibility of other, non-sugary foods as contenders for upcoming versions of Android (although we can’t think of any off the top of our head). Check out more in the Nat and Lo’s fun behind the scenes video down below.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.
