Download: Nexus stagefright patches are now going out OTA

In case you didn’t know, Google is hard at work fixing broken stuff, and one big vulnerability has sparked a fast track OTA to fix it. That vulnerability is Stagefright, a multimedia library whose errant code could allow a hacker to take control of your phone by simply sending an MMS video.

Google announced updates for nearly all modern Nexus devices and announced a program that would bring us monthly security patches, and while the OTA only spread to a few in limited form it’s now going out over-the-air to a wider range of people.

With that, the OTA links for the update have started popping up for several devices. These links can be dropped onto your device’s storage and flashed over the latest build, though if you’re on a custom ROM or anything other than the latest official firmware you’ll want to dodge this as it may not be compatible. This is opposed to flashing factory images, which will set your device to an operating state such as when you first took it out of the box (so don’t use those if you don’t want to lose any information).

Remember that you’ll have to flash these atop appropriate builds, so be sure to double check your current build and make sure it’s what you need to be on. Here are the links and their respective upgrade paths:

We’re still digging for links to the OTA files for Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 units, so be sure to check back periodically as we look to update this post with the goods. Need help on flashing these? The helpful and friendly souls at AndroidForums.com are more than happy to help, so stop by and drop a line!
