Android devices having the freedom to install non-Google sanctioned applications from 3rd parties has always been a sort of double edged sword. While this has lead for the platform to become a target for malicious activities, it’s now being used as a platform to further the terrorist agenda. Fun, right?
The terrorist group known as ISIS now has an Android app they’re using to further spread propaganda and keep supporters up to date with all the news, reports, photos, and all the graphic videos the organization can churn up. After their attempts at launching their own social network failed and social media posts are removed within minutes of going live, it was clear the hate group needed another medium to continue spewing their bullsh*t message. Android was a likely target.
We should be clear: the app is not available in the Google Play Store, nor will it ever be. But it can be sideloaded for the very brief moments it’s posted online (although we don’t recommend doing so for obvious reasons). While it’s possible the app could be honeypot for US agencies to weed out ISIS supporters, we think social media is already doing a fine job for that. We’re sure the app is riddled with all sorts of horrible permissions so even if you’re curious, we strongly urge you to stay away.
