While things like processing power or even display are two areas consumers look towards when choosing a new smartphone, camera is increasingly becoming the main selling point. Motorola’s devices has traditionally fallen short in this area, with the upcoming Motorola Moto X Style (Pure Edition in the US) finally looking to change that. It’s a story we’ve heard before and whereas Apple’s devices have long reigned supreme in this area, we’re just now seeing Androids finally topple the king. Needless to say, competition is fierce, more so than ever.
Motorola can tell us all day about their camera improvements, but it helps to see something from a more objective source. Enter camera rating website DxOMark who just published their review on the Motorola Moto X Style / Pure Edition’s 21MP camera. According them, the Moto X Style using a Sony IMX230 image sensor was able to produce some highly competitive results, only 3 (out of 100) points shy away from the Samsung Galaxy S6/Edge and actually tying the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. That’s saying something.
The Moto X Style walked away with a solid 83 score for both photo and video, with the lowest marks being given for noise (photo and video), auto-focus during video, and stabilization across the board (this could have been rectified with OIS). Sadly, the LG G4 has yet to be reviewed by DxOMark, so we couldn’t compare it to that.
Keep in mind that this is from a phone using early software and if history has taught us anything, it’s that things can change — sometimes drastically — after a software update. In any case, if camera output is important to you, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about on the Moto X Style. We look forward to giving the phone our own thorough review in the near future, but in the meantime, check out DxOMark’s review for more.
UPDATE: Looks like Digital Photography Review got early access to the phone as well, complete with photo samples. We posted a few of those below.
