Google name-drops “Android M” during Philippine Android One launch

OK, so the first time we thought we heard about Android “M” it really turned out to be a big misunderstanding, but the name has popped up yet again. Philippine press was treated to the launch of Android One today, and it brought a handful of affordable phones that ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop (which Google still has yet to comment on, but mostly seems to be a big bug fixer more than anything else).

Multiple outlets attending the event spoke with Google representatives at a Q&A session, and one rep suggested that Android One phones would be among the first to be treated to the platform’s latest updates. The rep even went as far saying “Android M” would be among those updates.

Unfortunately that’s all we know, and it’s quite obvious the next major update for Android will start with the letter “M.” What isn’t obvious is what its full name will be, what features it will bring and when it’ll be ready for public consumption, but Google’s willingness to begin talking about it suggests they’re hard at work and have likely made significant progress. In the meantime, I think most of us are still waiting for Android 5.0 Lollipop so we’ll worry about that before looking too far ahead.
