New Samsung Exynos 5 Octa announced, 20% better processing with double the graphics power
After being teased last week, Samsung is finally ready to pull the curtain on their latest Exynos 5 Octa. Announced via press release, the new 5420’s biggest feature is the new six-core Mali-T628 MP6 GPU (an industry first) that is said to deliver 2x’s more 3D graphics power vs their previous model. The new Exynos 5 Octa also features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A15’s clocked at 1.8GHz and 4 “smaller” Cortex A7’s cores clocked at 1.3GHz in a big.LITTLE configuration.
While not as dramatic as their new GPU, the CPU brings 20% better processing power (better than nothing, right?). The SoC also features dual-channel LPDDR3 clocked to 933MHz, providing 14.9GBps of memory bandwidth. Because of this, the new Exynos 5 Octa brings support for full HD WiFi display.
Lastly, multiple image compression (MIC) for pictures and video means the processor has to work less hard to display them, resulting in less battery strain. Something OEMs could definitely use more of. Still no word on exactly which of Samsung’s upcoming devices will be the first to feature the SoC, but mass production is said to be kicking off this August. Let’s hope that this time around, Samsung is able to provide for better developer support.
