Amazon cooking up a pair of smartphones, one with glasses-free 3D
Rumors of Amazon’s smartphone plans continue to swirl, but the latest introduce a twist that we didn’t see coming. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that sources close to Amazon have revealed that the retailer is working up two smartphones, one of which would include glasses-free 3D. Yes, you read that right.
Glasses-free 3D experienced a short burst of popularity with devices like the LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D, but we were hoping the technology had gone out of vogue. Instead, it sounds like Amazon will put its own spin on the concept with a phone that features retina tracking to automatically adjust the image to appear three-dimensional at any angle.
Little else is revealed about the Amazon phones other than the fact that they will use Qalcomm chips (no surprise) and come 4G LTE-enabled (pretty standard at this point). What is interest is that internally the phones are part of a so-called “Alphabet Project,” which derives its name from clever codenames like Project A, Project B, Project C, and Project D. The remaining letters are said to be associated with an audio-only streaming device and a set-top box in the style of Roku, both meant to drive demand for Amazon’s streaming and digital download services.
Signs point to Amazon launching many of these concepts later this year.
