Hands-on: Official HTC One Double Dip Hard Shell case [VIDEO]

50

The FedEx lady just stopped by my house, dropping off the official HTC Double Dip Hard Shell case for the HTC One. This is one of a few official OEM accessories unveiled for the HTC One at their New York press event a few weeks back and ever since the death of my Nexus 4, I’ve been dying to get my hands on some protection for my One.

Because I’m the owner of many other official HTC accessories, I kinda had an idea of what to expect. This isn’t your generic, run of the mill smartphone accessory from eBay. This is a quality piece of polycarbonate, featuring a premium soft touch finish and fitting the HTC One like a glove.

The hard shell case features full protection — well, everywhere but the screen — covering every last trace of aluminum and making the HTC One feel like a tank. It’s a tad thicker than I’d like from a hard shell, but you could argue it makes up for this minor shortcoming in protection. The top speaker grill portion is red, while the bottom is a dark grey, followed by light grey on the back. HTC’s choice in color scheme will no doubt turn off some (of course, colors always have been a subjective thing), but I think it fits the phone nicely. For those interested, the Double Dip case currently sells for $30 direct from HTC.

  1. I loved that his phone was ringing during the review. It looks like an awesome case.

  2. Nice case design but no thanks… couldn’t give up the beautiful aluminum.

    1. I’m thinking that too. May run with a full-body shield.

      1. Good luck, seriously, because if you drop it, it’s all going down hill from there. I’m waiting till I see the first of the smashed HTC One’s.

        1. It’s made of metal… DOES THAT MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU PLASTIC LOVING IMBECILES?!

          1. You’re an idiot. Is the screen made of metal too?? The back of my S3 has survived at least 20+ drops to the ground.

          2. Isn’t the screen made of gorilla glass?

          3. Wow! I didn’t know the screen was made of metal too! :p

And metal still gets chips and scratches just like plastic.

    2. I know what your saying but in some cases its good to have it available for some situations.

  3. Looks even uglier now.

  4. awesome, cant wait to get mine.

  5. Oh. A case. For an expensive piece of technology. Good idea, butterfingers.

    1. Call me crazy, but I think expensive technology should be durable enough to survive a 2-inch drop. *shrugs*

      1. The phone is roughly half the price of comparable other phones. Skimping a bit on durability is a good trade off for such an awesome phone at such a low price if you ask me. Im sure some sacrifices had to be made to keep cost down.

        1. I’ve made not secret of my disdain for Chris’ whining, but he has a valid point. Such a small distance should not have produced such drastic results. I would hardly call that skimping a “bit”, rather that’s completely ignoring durability.
Though you also have a valid point, to bring high-end devices to market with lower prices, corners must be cut somewhere.

The problem is, making the decision to forgo plastic on the Nexus 4 in favor of glass wasn’t a cost cutting move. Quite the opposite. They wanted to make it feel even more premium, even though durability was clearly an issue.

          2. I would have preferred polycarb like the One X had personally. but Yeah That makes sense. They had to have that disco back though!
It would seem they hid the cheaper (less durable) design by adding premium feeling materials.
I’ve dropped my Nexus 4 a ton of times and I dont rock a case.
I think the design is flawed in the way that the glass is super weak around the camera and speaker cutouts because its a really large, thin sheet of glass with holes in it on top of a flexible plastic phone.

      2. oh! so now you’re bothering with a full body shell. because aluminium is way more breakable than glass. sheesh..

  6. it looks good to the point you wouldn’t want a case, but i wouldn’t want any hairline scratches on it after a while. so i would definitely go with a case. nice. all my phones still look like they came out of the box for the first time.

    1. I used to be that way. Then I realized I always ended up with perfectly new looking devices that were totally obsolete. So now I go naked. Enjoy the phone and don’t sweat the little scuffs…it’s going to be worthless in a year or two anyway.

      1. You know what… you make a damn good point.

        1. So by that logic, can I have your One in a year or two?

        2. Hey Chris, did you put a screen protector on it? My is arriving today and got the case in the mail yesterday and am wondering if its even needed with todays phones??

          1. No, I don’t have a screen protector on the One (yet). I plan on picking one up soon.

      2. I agree! I use to rock cases on my phone but at the end of the I get a new one and move on . I don’t sell the old phones & they pretty much sit around.

  7. Like most iPhone cases, it completely does away with the main selling point of the phone: its design.

    1. iPhone’s build quality is garbage.. To me build quality isn’t just about looking good, but it’s also about how it holds up.. Long story short Metal>Glass.. DOESN’T EVEN COMPARE..

      1. And isn’t the iPhone 5 made of metal too?

        1. there is a top and bottom sliver on the back that is glass.

        2. yes its metal but it is painted metal and the color on the htc one is that color from the manufacturing process so I’m sure it will stay looking good a lot longer than the iphone 5

  8. Nice case, need more colors

  9. just an awesome idea, complain about samsung’s use of plastic, then proceeds to wrap the beautiful aluminium in a piece of plastic

    1. That’s like saying “iPhones don’t crack easily”, just because you put a case on it. No matter what is covering my phone, I will always take the time to appreciate the build quality…

      1. Wow, this phone looks and feels fantastic! Now i’ll get this super cheap piece of pastic and cover phone with it, hiding the awesome build quality and masking the feel of a premium device!

  10. I’ve received my case already. The case appears to attach and remove rather easily so I plan on using the case in the day-to-day to prevent wear-and-tear but definitely going bare when out in social gatherings to show off the beautiful aluminum casing.

    1. To show off? How old are you, 12? Who shows off their phones build quality.

      1. People who don’t have Galaxy phones

        1. Because the Galaxy doesn’t need to be shown off I guess, everyone knows it has the better everything but build quality…
Would look pretty silly pulling out your phone, then pulling off the case and going how cool does this look? Then you drop it, scratch and dent it and cry. Meanwhile the galaxy owners are laughing at you. ;-)

          1. I have a note 2 and I love showing it off or I did when I first got it. I just wish I could leave it bare without a case since it looks so awesome but I can’t cause 1 drop without a case would not be good.

      2. A lot of people. I almost guarantee if you had this phone you would be showing it to all your friends too. If you don’t then that’s your choice. No need to act like a child with your comments. Seems to me you are the one acting like a 12 year old.

  11. The colors are making me feel angry. Could never own this

  12. I really thought that was my phone ringing until you said it was yours. it’s the same ringtone and everything o_O

  13. Such an ugly case for a beautifully designed phone.
    I think a clear case at most…

  14. Speaking as a future SamsungS4 owner, Hilarious how everyone says that the plastic qualities of the S4 makes it look so cheap. And here, HTC is offering a plastic cover to cover up the premium aluminum. Guess what I’m going to do? I’ll get a black Samsung S4 and get a anodized blue aluminum back cover for my phone… Whose will look cheap now!?

  15. Don’t like the ugly red top, if it was the same color as the bottom it would be a go. Can you get in all one color??

    1. There will be after-market covers for this phone that wont make it look like a Playskool / Fisher-Price device… or somebody will just make ‘end caps’ in every color possible so that you can customize your device.

  16. Make sure to throw a screen protector on there so we don’t have to hear about you breaking your beloved again.
