ASUS to follow Fonepad with second Intel-powered Android?
ASUS forayed into Intel territory with the announcement of the Atom-powerd Fonepad, but a new rumor says the company will soon launch a more pocketable x86 device running Android 4.2.2. The phone, which doesn’t have a specific name at this point, is said to run either a 5 or 5.5-inch display with processing courtesy of Intel’s Clovertrail+ CPU.
The dual-core processor, which is built on a 32nm process, has recently been seen clocked at 2GHz for the Lenovo K900, a smartphone that seems to be in the same ballpark as the rumored ASUS device. The ASUS phone, however, could be the first to launch with the latest Android build. The folks at Intel only recently released an Atom-compatible pre-alpha build of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
All information comes by way of Digitimes and their sources within the Taiwanese manufacturing industry. While their sources are often spotty at best, nothing about the latest rumor seems too far-fetched to be true. With the monstrous 7-inch Fonepad ready to launch with an Intel chip inside, it’s more than feasible that ASUS would explore the platform for future hardware.
