Sony’s “My Xperia” to rival “Find My iPhone”

Sony sees the need to challenge Apple in the lost device category as it will look to add its own competitive advantage for those who need extra smartphone protection. Enter “My Xperia,” a service that will allow you to locate your phone in the event that it gets lost or stolen. Alongside getting GPS coordinates to your phone’s position, you can have it play a notification sound, activate your display and even go as far as remotely wiping and locking your device.

None of this is ground-breaking for the Android scene — the folks at Lookout have done a great job of providing us with that with its third-party application — but this would mark the first time an OEM has decided to take the initiative and implement their own. This should make Sony an interesting option for the enterprise sector, an area that seems to have been a bit hesitant in adopting Android due to several perceived drawbacks in he security department.

The service will go into beta to starting sometime this year, and will only go out to select 2012 Xperia handsets in Nordic countries. We imagine the rest of you will get a chance to use it in due time, though, so sit tight and stay tuned for more information.
