Hands-on: Super Hexagon by Terry Cavanagh [VIDEO]

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Super Hexagon ever since it was released on the Google Play Store a few weeks ago. For the most part, my friends were unable to explain the appeal of the game only saying things like, “You just gotta try it.” At only $1 (for a limited time) on Google Play, I figured now was a good a time as any to give the game a spin.

A weird mix of music, sounds and mazes, you can’t really peg Super Hexagon to any specific genre (hardcore casual maybe?). With graphics straight out of the Atari era, I had a feeling I wasn’t going to take to the game… Oh, how right I was. Here’s a quick video of my frustrating brief encounter with Super Hexagon.

I’ve oft seen or heard of games like Super Hexagon. Games so difficult, you either wanna snap your phone in half, or throw it against the wall in frustration. If masochism is your idea of a good time (hey, we wont judge), then Super Hexagon is exactly what the doctor ordered. If you hurry, the “game” is currently 66% for a limited time only. For seasoned veterans of the Super Hex, care to screenshot any of your highest scores? I’m curious to see if anyone’s ever passed the 5 second mark, or if I’m simply that bad at it.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  4. I have the game on Steam and completed (aka survive for 60 seconds+ each) 5 levels out of 6, I am currently training (I guess you could say that at this level of insanity) for the last one, and oh my, you don’t want to see what it looks like : P

  5. This is the most amazing game ever! Beat Hexagon, Hexagoner, Hexagon (Hyper mode), Hexgonest (Hyper Mode). Can’t seem to get Hexagonest…

  6. I had the exact same reaction when I first played on my Nexus 7. But now I love it. I’ve got as far as 21 seconds before dying. :/

  11. You can also play the game online. Just google “super hexagon online” for anybody that’s still unsure as to whether or not it’s worth the dollar. It totally is.

I’ve always described the game as what hell must be like for TRON. Nonstop throbbing techno, a mad dash for a few seconds, then you die, respan, and repeat. It’s Sissyphus for the modern age.

  12. Thanks for the laugh. FYI, you can buy the music at

I can pass the Hard and Harder levels. But Hardest, Hardester, and Hardestest are just about unplayable (and I haven’t even unlocked Hardestestest yet). Time to finally come to terms with it: I’m old and slow :D

    1. Awesome. Thank you! :)

  13. Took me a very long time to get past the 8.xx second mark. But once it becomes natural to move between sections, it gets (a little) easier. Now I regularly get over 20 and sometimes over 30. As you can see, my best so far is 41.16 seconds. Haven’t tried anything beyond Hard yet.

  14. That’s some psychedelic sh!t. No, thank you. People may get seizures from looking at that screen.
