New Facebook update live on Google Play – Here’s an old vs new comparison [VIDEO]

50

That totally wonderific Facebook update that was supposed to go live later today? It’s live and yes, it’s totally awesome. Just like the Facebook guys promised, going full-blown native Android has made a world of difference, bringing forth an app that’s lighting quick and responsive. Say good bye to painful load screens, and images taking a lifetime to load. Posts from your “friends” are pushed to your device and your news feed is updated as they’re received. The result is 99% less pull-to-refreshes (we’ve calculated it). Neato.

There’s a few subtle UI changes as well. The action bar now auto hides as you scroll down your feed, resulting in a teensie bit more screen real estate than with the old app. Also, commenting on photos or posts results in a nicely animated quick popup letting quickly and easily leave awkward comments to that girl showing too much cleavage. Quick, quick, quick.

Comments: old vs new | Action bar: old vs new

Everything else is largely the same. It’s true there’s still a lot more work to be done, but I think it might be time to finally update all our 1-star ratings in the Play Store. Maybe to a… 3? Ah, what the hell. I’m giving it a 4. I am excite. If it’s been awhile since you downloaded the app, quick link has been provided below. Let me know what y’all think.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. I don’t like the ‘action bar’ hiding when I scroll down. It’s not clear how to make it come back up when I stop and want to make a post (going up a little doesn’t do it). Also I don’t like how when you look at the comments on a post that the original post is hidden and you can ONLY see the comments.

It’s an improvement but still a lot of work to do.

    1. Yeah, I think when you scroll back up, it should come back. That, or when you stop scrolling, it could come back (it did that for me out of nowhere). Needs some work.

      1. yes i agree. like in g+ you just scroll up a tiny bit and the bar shows up. on fb you ahve to scroll all the way up

      2. Might want to block the message its kind of funny lol..

      3. The action bar on my Nexus 4 never goes away, no matter how far I scroll. Hm.

        *Edit*:

Oh, you mean the Status/Photo/Check In bar, not the actual action bar at the top. Unless you don’t. That’s what hides for me.

  2. I loved the update. ! thumbs up!

  3. Still no tablet support. NIce update for phone, but it absolutely sucks on tabs… Seriously when are they going to fix this!

  4. Super smooth… a not that the older one was THAT bad, but this one flies

    1. Yeah, scrolling is endless now. I love it. On the old one, you’d hit a refresh wall when scrolling down to really old posts.

      1. So I hit up Amy on Facebook and told her u wanted to wear her out, ur in there man!

  5. fiiiiinally! I wish they wouldn’t wait so long to release native apps on Android, but I sure am happy its here. Makes me hate Facebook just a little bit less. ; )

  6. and yet, despite the fact it has a menu bar and whatnot built in, on HTC devices, we have that stupid pointless black menu bar at the bottom, wasting screen space. idk if this is HTC or apps that require a “menu” button, but that’s making my beautiful DNA screen look like crap.

    1. You can get rid of that in the Settings. Look at “Buttons & something” and change your button configuration :)

      1. wait chris, do you mean on the DNA, or in the FB app? unfortunately, if you mean in the phone itself, HTC didn’t include that on the DNA like the One X has : and i’m not rooted yet

        1. That’s truly terrible, huge fail on htcs part… That menu u bar is hideous, I don’t know what they were thinking with that in the first place

          1. They were going with Android’s new design method — back, home, multitasking button — unfortunately, not every app is following Android’s guidelines.

Other OEM’s like Samsung or LG said “eff it” and added a physical menu button that critics clowned on, but made more sense (no menu bar popup).

  7. “Whoaaaa. Hey, what’s up girl?” Best.. review.. starter.. ever..

    1. Got a little distracted O_o

      1. I don’t blame you. I had to do a double take to make sure she was worthy of such an epic review comment lol.

      2. You STOOPID Chris :p

Make another vid with your Old Man in it….FUNNY!!!!! :)

  8. Much better!

  9. “The horrible and weird things I would do to you…” “Marry Me”

    This video got weird.

    1. Well you must understand Chris…He is a STRANGE BIRD to say the least o.O

  10. Oh snap, Facebook Pop actually works now.

  11. Why does it still use so much memory and have so many running processes though. This app has like 5 processes, many of which run even when the app isn’t open. It also uses like 50mb of ram! Seems crazy to me. Fast for Facebook uses 20-25.

  12. Hi Chris, is there any way to save a wall pic to your phone. I see options to set as wallpaper but not save to gallery

    1. It doesn’t really let you download the image to your gallery which is lame. But you can click the “share” button to send the image to your Dropbox or Google Drive account.

  13. its very laggy but then again the other was also

    1. It isn’t laggy it runs much smoother.

  14. Chris now she is going to know you are the stalker

  18. I hate Facebook!!!!! It’s for fake people who don’t exist in the real world.

    1. Thanks for the irrelevant comment and adding nothing to this discussion. Well done.

  19. Finally, the Android app of Facebook has become well

  20. Ummm Ok Chris…..STALKER ALERT!!!! Run Amie Lynn…Run Girl….LAWD!!!!!!

  21. Who is Aime Lynn?

  22. That Galaxy S3 screen is putting LG’s to shame.

    1. It’s actually a Note 2.

      1. *facepalm* My bad! They look pretty similar.

  23. no more option to delete my own comments?????

  24. Um… When I click to go to a notification it stays loading. This is usually the case when the notification is a link I posted. All other posts load fine.

    Hmm…

  25. I like it. This is how I pass some of my down time during a 36 hour shift.

  26. anyone know how to delete comments? old version you were able to swipe and delete but not that option is no longer there
