Sony Mobile to cut 15 percent of global workforce, 1,000 jobs in jeopardy

In the name of streamlining and increased profits, Sony will cut 15 percent of their global workforce, or about 1,000 jobs. The company is specifically looking to reduce its presence in Sweden , with the majority of reductions focusing on their phone plant in Lund. The cuts come less than a year after Sony completed the buyout of mobile operations from once partner Ericsson and signal the beginning of the mobile maker’s shift towards operating the business out of Tokyo. The process of downsizing, which also includes consultants located in Sweden, should be completed by March 2014. Remaining operations in Lund will focus on software development.
