Gamestop Introducing Cloud Gaming Service “Spawn” For Tablets and Connected TV’s – Launching Next Summer

Looks like Gamestop will be the newest company to jump head first into the cloud gaming scene, announcing today a new service called “Spawn,” launching sometime during the summer of next year. Gamestop’s president Tony Bartel revealed the news in a conference call yesterday saying,

“Based on consumer feedback, our success in selling mobile devices and the imminent launch of new consoles, we have decided to move our technology to a PC-based model. Customers tell us that they prefer to leverage cloud gaming to power their mobile occasions, and we are in active conversations with publishers and developers to leverage our patented game virtualization technology to deliver hundreds of games to PCs, tablets, and connected TVs. We expect to launch this new service in the summer of 2013.”

Spawn wont exactly work the same way as competitors like Onlive. Spawn will be different in that it wont virtualize and stream PC games primarily, instead streaming console titles, requiring separate consoles for each player with it’s own game. Keep in mind Gamestop’s will not be streaming console games to consoles, only “PCs, tablets, and connected TVs” in which Android tabs are a shoe-in.
