Growing up, I’ve oft fantasized in the dark confines of my parent’s basement of having a living, breathing Rei Ayanami of my very own. Well, this new phone from Sharp may have topped even that. The SH-06D is probably one of the most unique Android devices ever to step foot out of Japan. Themed to accurately reflect the design and stylings of the popular Japanese anime, Evangelion, the device features a busy UI that would make a WP7 fanboy weep.
The whole device screams of the cartoon series with a fine attention to detail (notice that even the physical buttons below have been themed). At a glance, it would be nearly impossible to identify the SH-06D as an Android device. Just look at those custom icons, widgets and wallpaper. This is definitely not just your regular “R2-D2 job.” Specs remain largely the same as the Sharp Aquos SH-06D3D, with a 4.5-inch, 720p, 3D “MAGI” display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, extendable antenna and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The device also comes pre-installed with 3D versions of the Evangelion movies.
This is Japan-only and only a limited number of these will go on sale sometime in June 2012. I think it’s safe to say you’ll see the rebirth of Lilith before this device ever sees an over-the-air update to Ice Cream Sandwich. Am I crazy in thinking this phone is gorgeous?
