Kurio Android tablet is for the kids (and mom and dad, too)
More and more parents are finding their smartphone or tablet the perfect way to occupy a restless youngster, and device manufacturers are catching. At CES we brought you a first look at the Vinvi toddler tablet, and now Inspiration Works is offering up their own Android slate tailored to kids. The Kurio will be available in 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch options with 4GB of internal storage and expandable memory up to 32GB via a microSD card. The smallest model will feature a 0.3MP front-facing camera only, while the two larger options add and additional 2MP rear camera. There are no details on processor type or clock speed nor are there any on the Kurio’s RAM spec, but the tablet is capable of 1080p playback via its HDMI out port. The device also features a USB port. Perhaps most surprisingly, the tablet will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (though the prototype runs Gingerbread).
In terms of kid-friendly features, the tablet comes pre-loaded with software that allows a parent to set profiles for up to eight children, allowing varying degrees of access to websites and applications depending on each child’s maturity level. Sites can be blocked by keyword or URL specifically, though the tablet takes an active block-first approach when in kid mode, cutting back on any content that may have slipped through the cracks. A child-proof rubberized case cuts down on the sharp edges to keep the little ones safe, but remove it and turn off the parental controls and Inspiration Works hopes to offer a tablet that is equally appealing to adults.
It’s a lot better than sharing your high-powered Android smartphone with your toddler, that’s for sure.
