Sony Ericsson Gives Early Hope for Ice Cream Sandwich on Xperia Lineup

Without offering any specifics, Sony Ericsson confirmed via its Dutch Facebook page that the company will bring Android Ice Cream Sandwich to its 2011 lineup of Xperia smartphones. After getting off on the wrong foot with Android upgrades for their initial Xperia offerings, SE has been pretty good with providing new software and features to their more recent handsets. Still, the process of getting their latest Xperia handsets up to speed with Gingerbread is ongoing. Sony Ericsson’s official statement reads:

“Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.”

While having a “plan” is a lot different than actual specifics, SE can offer little more until Google makes the latest Android source code available to all manufacturers. We have no reason to believe that Xperia phones won’t receive Android 4.0, but as we all know “plans” often change.
