On Google’s Q3 earnings call, Larry Page said a few words about Ice Cream Sandwich ahead of their October 19th/18th unveiling. He mentioned that he was super excited for the release, that it was incredible and that we won’t believe what they’ve managed to do in this release. We’ve seen a bit of what he’s talking about already but we’re expecting them to go much deeper come next week.
He also mentioned the growing patent issue with their many OEM partners. The “Android tax” being imposed on them from competing patent-owning OEMs and other patent trolls hasn’t deterred any of them from dealing with Android.
Still, with aggressive actions such as Apple getting Samsung’s flagship smartphone banned from being sold in particular regions it’s important now more than ever to “clean up.” If that means buying up patent-rich companies like Motorola for $12.5 billion, so be it.
