R-Type Coming Soon to Android – Bringing Back Oldschool 16-bit Fun

24

Developer DotEmu is bringing back the old-school when they debut the 1987 hit, R-Type on the Android Market this September 12th. You may remember this retro 16-bit game from back in the day when it rocked the world with (then) cutting edge graphics and frantic side-scrolling shooter gameplay.

The Android edition will pretty much be a direct port of the original title but optimized with new touchscreen controls and support for Open Feint for sharing your game scores/progress. The game features tons of power-ups, enemies, boss fights and of course, the famous charge shot. For most of you, this will be your first time ever playing R-Type but now you get to see what all the hype was about.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Yes, loved this game on my nes

  2. I’m not sure if I like how we are moving away from using emulators to now having dedicated apps for certain games. Seriously, I don’t know how I feel about this. Can anyone tell me?

    1. I don’t like emulators. Too complicated and wonky (at least the ones I’ve tried). Dedicated apps are just so much easier! :D

      1. Good argument. I award the “Dedicated Apps” team two points. Time for a rebuttal from the “Emulators”…

        1. Dedicated apps a low for better monitization of otherwise dead apps. Much better for devs… not as good for consumers.

        2. Okay. I have 4 Emulators and they’re pretty easy to set up. I have waaaay more titles then those that eventually trickel out to the market. Now that I have the Sixaxis application and the PS3 remote going on it’s crazy.

I’m talking Contra 3 on SNESOID over HDMI with a bluetooth controller. Rtype is next just for you.

          Who’s keeping score?

      2. You know nothing.

    2. Did you buy R-Type on the NES? If not, I don’t see why anybody should have a problem with paying for the game instead of bootlegging the roms.

      1. You underestimate the pirates.

        1. that is his argument is that if you use an EMU then EVERYONE that uses is most likely stole it.

with a dedicated app, sure it will get uploaded to those pirate android app sites but with this case MOST people would have paid for it.

      2. Note: R-type was never ported to the NES, but to the Master System and Turbografx-16. Often confused with Gradius, which also rules.

  3. I’d love to see Super C ported to Android, but I admit it’d probably only be playable on the Xperia Play. Too twitchy to be feasible with touchscreen controls.

  4. ZX Speccy rules 8)

  5. i would gladly pay all over for this game. i grew up on this. soooo many hours spent fragging the crap out of stuff with a little ship.

  6. i wish game makers would say “hey we know we have the ability to make games with super realistic graphics… but… we can choose to go all ols school and shit and sometimes thats the better (oh yes, i said better) option”

  7. I loved this game! Don’t care if dedicated or rom format… just as long as it has the same feel as the old game.

  8. I’m a fan of emus, but don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked by this announcement. The game will most likely work better because it’s optimized for touch screens.

Emus just offer almost every game available – many of which will never be released

  9. One of the best side scrolling shooters evah!

  10. I absolutely LOVED R-Type in the arcade. I used to play the crap out of that game. Can’t wait for this to come out which is right in time for my birthday.

The only way this could get any cooler is if the developers acknowledged the controller API for the Xperia Play (which I own). I would happily put down Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja and just play R-Type all day long.

  11. i hate Open Feint …..

    1. What? You don’t like to have fun? lol I hate it too. Worse than admob.

  12. TEMPEST!!! (screw Major Havock!) for the Tab

  13. This is truly awesome news. This is by far one of my all time favorites. I’m so excited. I will gladly pay for this.
