STRaND Sending a Nexus One into Space, Wants to Take Your App Along for the Ride
The University of Surrey and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. are back at it again, sending their Surrey Training Research and Nanosatellite Demonstrator (STRaND) into space with a Nexus One in tow. The STRaND-1 is what is known as a three-unit CubeSat, a satellite measuring only 34cm x 10cm x 10cm and weighing no more than 4kg. While the actual satellite feature its share of experimental Pulsed Plasma Thrusters, high-performance computing hardware with webcam and WiFi, Altitude Determination System, GPS, electromagnets, and gyroscopes, the Nexus One also brings its fair share of technology. Most importantly, it runs apps.
Now this isn’t the N1’s first space rodeo, but it’s the first time it could enter the upper atmosphere running an app of your own making. The groups behind STRaND are running a competition seeking an application to complete tests, crunch some numbers, or even just do something quirky or fun. It’s up to the designer to decide.
