Google Officially Announces New Version of Market for Phones, Rolling Out in the Coming Weeks for Froyo and Higher

Remember a while back when we got our first glance at an updated, prettier and seemingly more useful Android market application? There were rumors that it’d be coming shortly after its leak, but those beliefs have since waned. Fortunately, it was definitely real and it’s finally here. This version of the Android market introduces channels for books and movie rentals alongside the apps and games we were already able to access from our phones.

They’ve also added more “top” charts as well as the editors’ picks section. Needless to say, we’re anxiously awaiting its arrival. Google says it’ll be available for all Froyo and higher devices and that the rollout should be live for US users “in the coming weeks”. No need to “update” anything as this will happen automatically, just as the last one did. Users in other regions can expect the update sometime after the US gets it. Grab a look at the new market in the video above. PS: No, you’re not the only one who thinks this app looks like it belongs on Windows Phone 7. [Google]
