Now Hiring: Games at Google

4

Well, we don’t have much to go on. Just a job posting from Google HQ looking for a product manager to head a new property titled “Games at Google.” When most people hear gaming and Google they immediately think Android. Could this new job postiton be aimed towards gaming on Android ala Open Feint (posting and saving scores/tophies/achievments) or more towards a web related service for Chrome users?

It’s no secret that Google is very much known for their “me too” business model. We’ve seen Google dip their hands into just about everything web related and this is just another drop in the bucket. Arch nemesis and rival, Facebook, has been doing pretty well for themselves in the world of social casual gaming – something I can honestly say I never thought would take off. But I guess I underestimated the power of casual farming and casually knocking off your mob friends.

Lets hope they put forth a full effort and team of nerds to properly make a suitable new IP. We don’t want another another Orkut/Buzz/Wave on our hands. What do you guys think Google could be getting themselves into now? Share your thoughts below.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  3. My guesses are
    1) a social gaming network similar to openfien, I phone’s game center, or xbox live on windows phone 7. As a developer the idea has me drooling :-)

    2) a game platform for Google TV and Google Chrome

    3) software to help developers build better games on android

  4. Wonder if this has anything to do with PopCap reportedly being purchased today?
