You Need to Download Hungry MonstR Now [Video]

39

Our attention has just been diverted to a new game in the Android market called Hungry MonstR. It’s a new title from Blowfish Studios and its premise makes it sound like a unique “defense” game: there’s an ice cream cone that some weird looking monsters want, and your job is to keep them away from it.

You play by using your finger to flick a monster into one of four tubes – the monster’s color will determine which tube it needs to be in. Flicking a monster into the wrong tube will briefly clog it up. You can get power-ups such as a rainbow that’ll allow you to throw any monster into any tube, which is effective if it’s becoming increasingly difficult to defend that precious ice cream.

Nicole Graves from Blowfish gives us a pretty quick, but still thorough look at the game in the video above. It’s running on an iPad, obviously, but it’s identical on Android. It’s only $.99 in the Android market so make no delay in checking this out if it interests you.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Rovio.

  2. I love this game :D, it makes so fun

  3. Hi Sebastian, this is Nicole from Blowfish Studios, happy to hear your enjoying the game!

Hi TzuDohNihm, would you mind pointing out how Hungry MonstR is similar to Angry Birds? Thanks for comparing us to Rovio, but we don’t see the similarities.

  4. @ TzuDohNihm – what game is this imitating? Worth a buck. My kid will love it.

  5. Haha, TzuDohNihm just got called out. He probably hasn’t played it yet.

  6. pass

  7. This game looks really great, but kinda don’t like that your playing it on an iPad.. Lol just kiddin! Will this game be a tablet only game or smartphones? Both would be great? Lol

  8. Is there a Lite version to try first?

  9. I’ll try it out on my phone, but I’m going to guess this is better played with the larger screen of a tablet.

  10. @TzuDohNihm

Charging a buck for such a simplistic game they’re certainly not gonna be imitating Rovio’s download numbers.

    Buh-ZING!

  11. Price in artikel is not correct:
    AU$ 1,99 (ongeveer € 1,41)

that’s almost twice as expensive! But worth every penny (i bought it!)

  12. 61p i bought it, its crazy cool, aha

  13. Cool game Nicole!! Thanks! :)

  14. @jappschaap it actually is $.99 in America, might have been a bit more expensive for you in Australia after conversion rates.

  15. Same genre as Smiley Pops and Hextacy, complete time absorbers that are fun to play when you have nothing else to do. What’s with the iPad though? Couldn’t they show us what it looks like on a Xoom or similar Android tablet?

  16. I’d like to see a lite version (maybe 1 map and 1 mode playable?) to try this game out. I’m all for finding addictive games that I can’t put down. (Angry Birds, Jewels, etc..)

  17. @Nicole: Does this run on Eclair? (2.1) I can’t find it on the market

  18. My Cliq 2 bogs down when there are a ton of monsters on the screen which reduces the speed/ accuracy of getting rid of them. My kids are going to love this. :) (And it cost me $1 to buy it and I needed to put in my credit card info. When did T-Mobile / the Market do away with being able to put market purchases on my monthly bill?)

  19. Yo Nicole what’s that chick’s name, and can I get her #?

  20. The title design is a blatant attempt to cash in on a visual similarity to Angry Birds. Hungry/Angry. I bet you even had a meeting or two in order to decide to remove the “e” from monster in order to bring it closer in length to birds. The shapes of the characters and their placement is all designed, clearly, to create a visual mimicry of Angry Birds and the .99 price seems to be in place as a decision to capitalize on the quick purchases that will be made based on a quick visual recognition.

I have not played the game, random stranger on the internet.

Bear in mind I am not saying that visual mimicry is a bad thing but the title card is a blatant attempt to cash in on a visual form of “name recognition.” If I created a gaming app I would spend time making sure it appealed visually to the market I wanted as well.

You started to convince me a bit until you said the .99 price. Just stfu. .99 is standard, noob. And you have to admit you’d smash the bitch in the vid if she lost like 5-10 pounds

  22. make that 15-20

  23. Dear Random Internet Misogynist,

Wow. You are a piece of shit.

As to the price, I understand .99 is a standard price. Or you could offer it free. The game isn’t going to create a splash in the same way Angry Birds did so charging for it versus allowing ad revenue to accrue is the smart way to go with the shortened window of return for apps.

  24. Keller: I might not entirely agree that this is a cash-in on Angry Birds, but you really are a fucking dick. The girl was nice enough to post back on here immediately and you immediately go and make it look like this site is frequented by idiots. Do us a favour and leave.

  25. In fact, Quentyn, how’s about getting a flag system put in on here? I know it’d be some work but it’d pay off if we can escalate horrible shit like Keller posted up to you guys.

  26. very fun and cute game, highly recommend it to everyone, plus it’s 99 cents, stop being cheap and buy that game, i know you wont regret it

  27. Not running on my lg optimus 2x.
The Game starts fine but keeps stucked at the loading screen.
Does someone know how to fix this? Thank you

  28. @Tzu,
That was a nice explaination, but I honestly fail to see any of the comparisons you made. There are plenty of games with cutesy animation and bubble letters that predate Angry birds and that will continue to be released on the market. IMO, you are completely reaching here. Also, tons of games sell for $.99, and I mean TONS. How on earth are you saying that even the price tag is a copy of Angry birds?

  29. This looks nor plays nothing like AngryBirds and is a great price at .99 cents. I’d easily pay .99 cents for AngryBirds without all the ads. Best of luck blowfish studios, keep the great games coming.

  30. You should have mentioned that it requires Android 2.2 otherwise it won’t work…

  31. I hope the game is way better than that crappy video…like they laid the camera down next to the iPad to shoot it…does the company have more than one person working there? or a tripod? Come on.

  32. I believe I may enjoy the smash with no weight loss…..Just saying………….Lol

  33. It’s a fun time waster. I’d put it in the same category as Fruit Ninja. It plays well on a Droid X running Liberty 1.5, but hangs at the splash screen on a stock Xoom.

  34. @Keller lolz

  35. Lmao @ Simon . Flag me into oblivion you dumb little bitch. Ive been banned on engadget 689745 times, it doesnt stop me.

  36. im glad i gave you the lulz covert

  37. Keller: But engadget sucks.

  38. Why did you show me this? I have played like 20 games already. So simple, but so addictive.

  39. well done guys, fun game!
