Newly Announced Motorola Defy is Rugged and Runs Android 2.1

Who said rugged meant a phone had to actually look like a piece of military equipment? With the announcement of the Motorola Defy, Moto brings their second Android handset specced out to resist the elements and keep chugging under even the most hostile conditions. Taking a page from the Motorola i1’s book, the Defy is prepared to take a beating (if it has to). You get a 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass display at 854×480 resolution and built to IP67 durability specifications, the handset is resistant to dust, scratches, impact, and water up to a meter deep for as long as a half hour without even stuttering.

The phones OMAP 3610 chip is clocked at 800MHz and Swype is included as a software keyboard option. A downside here is the phone is planned to launch around Europe in Q4 this year with Android 2.1. No word on Froyo for the device as of yet. At least it isn’t launching with Android 1.6, however.
