It’s not often we see an Android device with a portrait mode physical keyboard. It’s even more rare to see a device with a portrait mode physical keyboard which is exposed by a vertical sliding mechanism. That’s exactly what Alcatel’s bringing with the OT-980. We first suggested that this was the same device that snuck out of the cracks early last month with a red finish.
The device – headed to France – will run Android 2.1, but the device seems to stand on the side of “mid-range” overall. It’s housing a 2.8-inch touchscreen is resistive – something also rarely seen on an Android device these days (outside of tablets) – which may not sit too well with some people.
Other specs include a 600MHz processor, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth and WiFi (no word on standards and versions), 3G, microSD support, and more. The keyboard will actually be AZERTY for those in France, so the pictured QWERTY layout here indicates this could also be headed for other markets. We’ll be on the lookout for any new information regarding pricing and availability.
