AT&T-Branded Samsung i897 Shows Up in the Wild, Cat is Now Halfway Out of the Bag
Some of you probably won’t remember the phone by its model number that showed up in a Bluetooth SIG profile a while ago, but the Samsung SGH-i897 was believed to be an AT&T-bound phone thanks to some McGyver-like work showing that the model number’s structure matched up with past Samsung devices on AT&T.
If that wasn’t a mouthful, then you’ll want to chew on the fact that its specs lined up VERY closely with what we know is the Samsung GT-I9000 (otherwise popularly known as the Samsung Galaxy S). With a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.1, and a 5-megapixel camera, putting two and two together lead us to believe that it couldn’t be any other phone.
If the device that AndroidGuys got their hands on is real (which they’re saying is indeed the i897), then it may not be the Galaxy S after all, but it looks like it’ll be just as good. Their source tells them it’ll be sporting a Snapdragon processor (different from the Cortex A8 found in the Galaxy S), though clock speeds haven’t been confirmed.
I also noticed that there is the default Google search widget on the main page of the handset. Not sure if this is a big deal but I remember reading that the Backflip used Yahoo search instead of Google. Of course this is a developer handset so they still might go with yahoo in the end.
We’re not sure why AG wasn’t able to show us anything past the boot screen, but we’ll always take every little drop that we can get. Even if this doesn’t turn out to be the Galaxy S that we’ve all wanted to land on AT&T, it could be just as powerful for some AT&T users out there who have yet to receive a high-end Android device (except for the upcoming Dell Streak, of course).
