Urbanspoon Comes To Droid and Nexus One

13

86182We just got an email from Urbanspoon about the launch of their new application for Android. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Urbanspoon is a restaurant slot machine application that we have already seen on the iPhone. It uses the accelerometer of the device so that all you need to do is shake the phone and the slot machine wheels spin until they settle on a restaurant nearby. Urbanspoon has expressed their excitement in working with Android devices because:

  • The big screen lets us show lots of detail.
  • Search is right at the top, and works instantly.
  • Nearby restaurants and other goodies are in the menu.
  • Did we mention that it’s blazingly fast?

Currebtly, Urbanspoon only works on Droid and Nexus One, and hopefully will come to others soon. They currently instruct other Android device users to go to their mobile site: urbanspoon.com/m. Seeing as how I am currently snowed in because of round 2 of this east coast blizzard, as soon as I can get out I plan on using Urbanspoon to try some new restaurants in my area. Anyone else excited for this app?

  1. Not currently ;)

  2. definitely. choosing a place for lunch with co-workers is a struggle everyday. this app will level the playing field and take the controversy out of the decision.

  3. downloaded and testing on droid

  4. I asked them about the fact that it is not available for any other Android phone, and they did not seem to indicate they had plans to make it so. They are spinning this as a big screen advantage. I’m a little disappointed, but it’s great there is at least some Android version. I would like one for my Hero.

  5. Awesome. Works like a charm.

  6. Gave it a try; the nearest restaurant was over 40 miles away. I’ll stick to Places Directory and POI Search.

  7. @rshuavee I hear that the cliq and hero will receive an update to android 2.1 in march, so you’ll be able to take advantage of all the new 2.1 apps.

  8. Yipee! This was on my list of critical apps that I wanted on my Droid since leaving Apple-land. I am very excited and it works well — except the shaking is a little hard.

Now, where is my Kindle for Droid?

  9. What exactly does this app use that only those two phones are possibly capable of running it? Nothing that I can see.

  10. They should be more specific for those that aren’t version savvy and just say it’s for Android 2.1+ instead of misleading folks to think it will only work on a Droid or Nexus. Works just fine on my G1 running 2.1. I haven’t tried it with 2.1 Sense UI, but imagine it would work fine with that as well and I’m fairly confident it will work fine with other phones that get the 2.1 update. The “big screen” has nothing to do with it working from what I can tell. I’ve been looking for this app for awhile as I know some iPhone users that have used it for some time now. It’s like a more fun quicker way of using Where.

  11. it is quite fun to play on slot machines specially if you win a lot”

  12. my sister is an addict on Slot Machines, she always play any kind of game on the slot machine -‘~
