SK Telecom Launching 13 Android Phones in 2010

In a move to counteract their rival’s exclusive iPhone agreement, SK Telecom has announced that they could launch as many as 13 Android Phones in 2010. Further, by 2013 the company could offer as many as 25 Android Phones making up almost half of their total line-up:

“We will have 25 smartphone line-ups in 2013, or 40 percent of our total handset offerings, mostly equipped with the Google OS,” the executive said, adding Android phones have strong competitive edges on Internet-related interfaces than devices with other operating system(s) including iPhones.

“It’s clear that SK Telecom will drive Android phones as consumers have greater preferences for phones providing a high accessibility toward Web-surfing and other multimedia contents. In that perception, Google’s mobile services are qualified,” he said.

SK Telecom is South Korea’s largest mobile carrier but their rival – KT – began exclusively selling the iPhone in the country on November 28th and has already sold more than 200,000 units. SK Telecom is obviously leveraging Android in hopes of keeping and growing their 50% to 30% market share lead.
