Dell Creating New Communications Unit For Mobile Devices

Dell is first and foremost a computer manufacturer but more recently a mobile phone maker, with the Dell Mini 3i being the first Android of the family. With New Year’s Resolutions right around the corner I’m sure many of you are thinking about “getting more organized” and that same goal is on Dell’s list too. The company will restructure their business units to create a new “Communications” division that will focus on an array of mobile devices.

An obvious move and much needed move that shows confidence in Dell’s mobile plans. If they thought the whole Phone thing wasn’t going to work afterall or they felt like maybe purchasing an existing phone maker was the better play, they probably wouldn’t put all this effort into creating a new unit when the work would have to be redone anyways.

The new unit will be headed up by Ron Garriques who oversaw Motorola’s Cell Phone Division in the Razr era but departed for Dell in early 2007 under criticism the company failed to move forward. He is currently the president of Dell’s Consumer division and there is no word who will replace him in that position.
