Drop the desktop and pick up your G1; after that get to scripting. Android Scripting Environment (ASE) allows a scripter to scribe his or her (his and her?) warez directly from the phone. Get your jiggy on with programming made easy through an easy to use interface that can be run interactively in a terminal. The scripts have access to a metric-grip-ton of the APIs that are available to standard applications. Examples of what you get access to:

• Handle intents
• Start activities
• Make phone calls
• Send text messages
• Scan bar codes
• Poll location and sensor data
• Use text-to-speech (TTS)

You may ask, why write scripts instead of real Android applications? Admittedly, Android’s development environment makes life pretty easy, but you’re tied to a computer to do your work. ASE lets you develop on the device itself using high-level scripting languages to try out your idea now, in the situation where you need it, quickly.

And from the looks of it you will be able to start scripting in Lua and Python right away; somewhere I read that Ruby and JS were on their way.
