The dream of a zero-bezel display may soon become reality. Park Won-sang, one of Samsung Display’s principal engineers, revealed last week that the company is working on a display which would allow manufacturers to build devices with a screen-to-body ratio of 90%.
The new panel would also allow for fingerprint and other sensors to be embedded below the display. Won-sang noted that Samsung is working on further improvements which would allow for a 99% screen-to-body ratio within the next few years.
“Samsung Display would roll out a full-screen display whose display area ratio (a scale that measures space taken up by a display on the front part of a handset) reaches more than 90 percent next year.”
Unfortunately, Park Won-sang did not confirm that the Samsung Galaxy S8 would sport the new display, but multiple sources have claimed that Samsung’s 2017 flagship smartphone would feature an edge-to-edge display along its sides, top and bottom.
With the recent introduction of the Xiaomi Mi Mix and its edge-to-edge display, a Samsung Galaxy S8 with a 90% screen-to-body ratio now sounds perfectly plausible.
