HTC Gives End of March Deadline on Ice Cream Sandwich Updates for Sensation Phones, Confirms More Devices

32

HTC today took to Facebook to give us insight as to when some of their devices would be getting upgrades to the illustrious Android 4.0, something that has escaped other manufacturers up to this point.

They confirmed that most of their HTC Sensation devices, including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, will be getting the upgrade in March.

The HTC Sensation XL will be getting it soon after. Beyond that, we’ve gotten confirmation for several other devices, though HTC didn’t give us a window outside of “later this year.”

In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

You can pretty much expect their first generation Snapdragon devices, such as the HTC EVO 4G, to be left out of the fold, but we have a feeling those who really want it can figure out how to get it. Anyone with these phones excited for an eventual release? [Facebook]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. they should release for the evo 4g….shoot id have no reason to upgrade…even to this day my evo 4g works properly with CM7 just drop some damn source code with ICS running properly and let the devs on the internet do the rest. They managed to get ICS running fairly smoothly on an evo 4g….and it seems the phone can handle it.

  2. My Evo 4g is already sporting a nice build of 4.0.3, thanks to Jared the Great.

    1. thats exactly the dev they should give the source code, build, or drivers for it to work properly…Jared the Great kicked ass on that rom.

    2. Have a link to that ROM? :)

        1. That link isn’t for ICS, it’s a GB build modded to LOOK like ICS. Damn good one, but not ICS

          1. No they had the build there…they had taken it down, but i believe they will repost an updated ICS build that they are working on for the Evo. We just need to give em time.

          2. Even in a video he posted it says Android 2.3.7. It’s based on CM7, which is GB based. CM9 is ICS based. If at some point in that XDA thread it changed from being CM7 based, could you please tell me what page that is on?

      1. Chris by the way i think that roms forum was closed due to negative comments and stuff. your gonna have to find a way to get in touch with Jared the great and see if he will provide a link to the last stable build he was working on.

      2. Sorry it took so long

You have to sign up on his website to download it

    3. link please. I havnt been able to find a good looking, stable, ROM for it yet

      1.  I’ve been running:

        http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11317-romics4031-11-12wip-ics-deck-evo-alpha5/

It’s still an alpha, so it has rough edges, but it’s been a daily driver for the last week and it works fairly well for me at least.

  3. Hopefully T mobile G2!

  4. Boo no EVO 4G! Can’t blame them, though. Heh. :)

Most early EVO 4G adopters should be ready for upgrade this summer, anyway.

  5. What about hTC Droid Incredible 2 on Verizon???

*Impersonates Andy Rooney voice* Boy, you know what really force closes my app?
    It shows Incredible S…

The sense 3.0/2.3.5 update is already out for
the Incredible S overseas & many people have
gotten it and are running it…
Now here we are with ‘Droid’ Incredible 2 & still
    nothing…
It bothers me that it states Incredible S with no
    mention of Droid Incredible 2…

  6. Why not the Inspire 4g?  It’s basically the same as the Desire HD.

    1. You see what I mean?

      1. no.  no I don’t.

        1. I was getting at hTC stating that they would update one specific phone model and not another closely related one with almost the same or the exact same hardware. Like Incredible S & Droid Incredible 2 & Desire HD & the Inspire 4G. We can speculate that the variants will get it but, from what hTC is saying, they will not because their is no mention of them.

    2. I’m sure it will be updated as well.  Its the same hardware.

  7. Later this year for the rezound… I swear if the Galaxy nexus had better reception id ditch htc in a second.

  8. I can’t wait for the Evo 3D to get it.  I’ve considered rooting and installing a 4.0-based ROM, but I’m new to this Android thing (Evo 3D is my 1st android device), and I’m a little scared. O_o

  9. Inspire is end of this year?

  10. i only opened this to look at the ice cream cookie

  11. As expected. HTC is ignoring the thunderbolt. HTC… what a joke.

    1. According to the Google+ post at
      https://plus.google.com/u/0/105983594520322058171/posts/1Pwtu8E4ZA4 in response to ”
Where is Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC Thunderbolt it was the first 4G phone it’s not even a year old yet. I feel like you should be supporting your devices for the full two year duration of a consumers contract. ” HTC replied ”
Stay tuned on this one, we should have news pretty soon.”. And they mentioned that a couple times, so keep your eyes peeled for something special.

  12. Amazing to me that the Thunderbolt doesn’t make the list lol

So much for that whole upgrade/support thing everyone signed

  13. Ok but we won’t get the cool new contacts layout but will be stuck with HTC contacts UI

  14. I gave up waiting for HTC to release 4.x a couple of weeks ago and switched to Virtous for my Sensation (given it took forever for them to not release 2.x for my old Hero).

If it wasn’t for being forced to have Sense, I might have tried their (probably more polished) release next month, but Sense is a piece of bloatware IMO, so I’ll stick with community ROMs thanks.
I like ya hardware HTC, but for everything else, you suck.

Note the missing feature of incoming calls not showing on lock screen, have to unlock, then answer.
Also get a message a few times a day about gapps crashing, but never noticed anything stop working.

  15. I’ve had 4.0.3 thanks to Insert Coin, so this doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

  16. ironic the old crap gets it first.

  17. They should definitely port a version to the evo 4g, based on the fact that wimax failed. If they were cool they would get it working so we can have aosp versions that completely work. Come on HTC like a billion people still have this phone!
