Android Weekend Roundup: February 1st Edition

10

Welcome to February, month of groundhogs and heart shaped candies. Android ushered out January with some good news that we missed, so to keep you up to date, we present you with the weekend roundup.

hugh-brissGoogle Is Arrogant

A MobileCrunch reader who was reading his Nexus One user manual (people still do that?) found a little Google humor going on that most people probably missed. In the section showing Call Logs there are 3 calls from a “Hugh Briss” – of course Hubris actually means “excessive pride or self-confidence; arrogance”. No wonder they had 3 calls back and forth in a 10 minute period.

Nexus One for AT&T Passes FC&C
Android and Ma Bell sitting in a tree – P-A-S-S-I-N-G (the FCC). That’s exactly what happened recently and we KNEW the Nexus One was likely headed to Verizon, Sprint and AT&T but this makes it all the more apparent. The current version of the Nexus One DOES work on AT&T but 3G will not – that is only compatible with T-Mobile. The one that just passed the FCC solves that problem. For those of you using the Nexus One on AT&T, how do you feel? [Engadget]

VZW Suggests Six Android Apps
New Droid user who isn’t sure what apps to get? Verizon sent out a press release suggesting six of them: (1) Weatherbug, (2) Platinum Sudoku, (3) Slacker Radio, (4) Fast Food Calorie Counter Pro, (5) dxTop: Home Alternative, (6) NBA Mini-Bobble Lebron James. Agree with these as choices? Personally I think the calorie counter is stupid (don’t eat fast food if you’re worried about calories, dummy!) [Press Release]

Xperia X10 to TMO Germany in April
The Xperia X10 is yet another device delayed by Sony Ericsson – hopefully this one will be worth the wait. In a press release E-mailed to the media, T-Mobile Germany announced an April launch of the Android device. Price and other details weren’t provided, but we know there are a lot of people waiting on this phone so… keep waiting! [TheUnwired]

Prototype Android Tablets with NVIDIA Tegra 2
With all the iPad hype going on there also seems to be a renewed interest in tablets of other types. The disappointment in the iPad’s features has led some to yearn for an Android alternative that gets it right. Will Park from IntoMobile met with the folks at NVIDIA to check out a few Android prototypes that might do just that. Here is a video:

  1. If you’re looking for a Sudoku app, I’d give the free OpenSudoku a try before paying for one of the alternatives. The interface is awesome and honestly doesn’t leave me wanting for anything different. It only comes with about 100 puzzles but you can download tons more online as well as generate more yourself using Gnome Sudoku.

  2. I’m one of those people really wanting a Nexus One with AT&T 3G bands. However, a lot of people seem to think that the FCC passing is for the Bravo and not the Nexus One. =\

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  3. Lavash Kiri => La Vache Qui Rit – It’s the Laughing Cow spreadable cheese.. Laughed hysterically when I saw that.

  4. WOOT AT&T 3G AT LAST!!!

  5. I can’t be the only person who thinks Sudoku is the biggest waste of time. Pick up a book. Enlighten yourself with knowledge. Do a crossword puzzle even. But Sudoku? Complete waste of time. What do you learn from it? For me, it has a zero fun factor.

  6. Is it certain that Verizon Wireless will carry the Nexus One? I need to upgrade from my Blackberry Storm 9530 and if it is certain that Verizon Wireless will be getting this phone, I would like to wait for it. If yes, when?

  7. For all you Non French Speakers..

Lavash Kiri is probably a play-on with the french phrase .. La vache qui rit .. aka The laughing cow… yup the CHEESE BRAND

  8. Why do all tablets regardless of OS include that waste of space 1″ boarder… I know we need to be able to grasp and hold it… But that is ridiculous…

My kingdom for a 1/4″ border ChromeOS or W7 tablet…

  9. Nexus One on At&t will be the best I will have to get one! I wonder if there will be the choice of renewing the contract with At&t after only 7 months of service to get some sort of discount though?

  10. Does anyone know when the h#ll the Moto Droid is getting 2.1?
