It’s official, folks. There are now 700,000 Android activations each day — a statement made just a few minutes ago by Google’s Senior Vice President of Mobile, Andy Rubin, via his Twitter. This is up from 500,000 back towards the end of June and at roughly 8 new Android activations every second, it’s a number that not only continues to grow but doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

March on Android….march on!!!
Even better news for developers!
You wonder why Apple feels so threatened…
Indeed, they have to sue as quickly as possible before people start seeing past the Apple hype.
hope once it reaches 1 million a day that a special goes on. like cheap apps on market
1 cent apps for 10 days.
Jesus Mary mother of Christ that’s a lot of activations.
EDIT: That’s over 255 MILLION activations per year.
It’s over 9000!!!!!!
priceless vegeta moment lol
What!? 9,000….There’s no way that can be right!
I don’t understand why the app store gets apps first.. Developers need to wake up to the reality that Android would be the better choice for them.. I also want to add that the android market needs a new “boot” feature since the market isn’t closely monitored. We need to be able to “boot” crappy apps as a community. Because it sucks to say 2/3 of Android Markets apps are trash and useless… With that the good apps get overlooked.
The app developers do their research, and at the moment it shows them that there is no profit to be made from the Android Market compare to the app store.
Quote here from a Swedish developer of massively popular iOS games says it all
“So far, iOS is the only platform on which apps are being sold in a great number,” he says. “If you’re not doing advertising or IAP, this is clearly an iOS market for now. Android Market and the likes are broken: they just don’t work from a purchasing point of view for various reasons.”
Piracy is much easier, fragmentation of devices and OSs means you app may not work on many devices, internal storage limitations even on new phones.
A Game dev makes a game for an iphone, he needs only to make sure it runs on the 3GS, 4 and 4S, and probably only on the last 2 major OS versions. Compare this to Android……
Yes there are some hurdles in the Android world but there many devs that are successful and many that are coming through with good apps.
The way I see it, it’s their loss. If they build a decent app, people will pay for it. I myself have paid up to $20.00 for an app and, IMO, it was worth every penny.
Devs who snub Android can take their apps and shoehorn them right up their butts. I’ll NEVER even consider buying into an inferior Playskool-like platform like IOS to use a dumb app or play a dumb game. Quit making excuses. Put up or shut up.
No profit is a bit of an exaggeration. The bit about fragmentation is definitely true, but a lot of app developers for Android don’t even attempt to make paid apps, assuming no one will purchase them. There’s tons of apps id rather pay for than have to see advertisements.
I find it hard to believe that some of the top apps on android that have been downloaded well over a million times at $2.99 each didn’t make a profit.
Sucks to be him I guess. Sounds like he is just being lazy. Waaaa, too many different hardware platforms on Android….waaaa.
Classic dev disassociative thinking. He is thinking what is best for him as a developer, not the people who will actually buy his stuff.
thats 700k more users to download my apps today!
I wonder how many of these are hackers reinstalling their OS over and over again. I know I’ve activated my device at least 3 times this month so far.
This has been answered over and over again. These are new activations to the Google platform. Unless you change you Google sign on every time, then you are only counted once.
Well over double the number of daily activations in Dec. 2010
This doesn’t mean new customers right?
Yes it does, it’s every new device being activated for the very first time not reactivation.
Meh….I think it’s both.
If you count activation of unofficals Androids like the Meizu MX and MIUI phones then the activations are over 900k a day. Emerging markets are the fastest growing Android markets and a lot of their phones are unofficial Androids that don’t get counted into these numbers.
That’s allot of freaking Androids. It’s an army!
Skynet! Skyneeeeeet!
WHY doesn’t this ‘Android Army’ file a petition w/ the government to stop Apple from suing any and all other phone makers? They go through extremely wasteful efforts to invalidate the design or function of every maker who isn’t them self, and as Android OEMs make up Apple’s biggest competition, I am starting to wonder when we are going to fight back not corp. vs corp. but as people who demand accountability from a business who had more money than the government itself!
