Opera Mobile and Mini Updated In The Market – New Feature Allows You To Monitor Data Use

16

I change default web browsers about as often as I change my underwear — like once a week. My new current fave? Opera Mobile. Recently, the Opera team updated their entire lineup including their popular Opera Mini and Opera Mobile web browsers for Android. If you’ve never heard of Opera, they provide web browsers that compress webpages up to 80% which results in significantly faster load times where coverage could be spotty.

Opera’s newest addition is the all new Data Usage page allowing you to monitor your data use and even track how much data you’ve saved by switching to Geic- er, Opera. This could help you stay far away from that 2GB cap and save your data for more important things… like cat videos. You can check out Opera Mobile for free on the Android Market.

  1. ok ill be honest i dont get the “switching to Geic- er, Opera” thing???…

    1. It’s a reference to the “I just saved a whole bunch of money by switching to Geico” commercials

    2. Maybe I watch too much television =/

      1. nah don’t worry Chris we get it , perfect time to reference geico lol :)

  3. Major correction, Chris. Only Opera Mini is a page compression browser. Opera Mobile is just another (often better) browser option.

    1. Turbo mode, in both Opera mobile and the desktop version, does compression.

    2. They have a “turbo mode” but not Mini’s option of choosing how much you want to compress images (which I like better).

I would go with Mini but it doesn’t support Flash =/

  4. o rightt.. eh kinda weak

  5. Opera Mobile is the best browser hands down. I’ve tried Dolphin, Firefox, and many others and Opera is my favorite. I love that it uses hardware acceleration so panning and zooming is smooth, almost as smooth as the iPhone or WP7. Get it!!

    1. That’s my favorite part too. Sometimes it acts wonky when entering text into things (like Disqus). If they can get all the bugs worked out it would be my favorite =)

    2. I mix it up a little bit, Opera doesn’t play nice with flash or many nice addons, but Dolphin does.

  6. Been able to check data usage since the update before this one….not news.

    1. Weird. I wonder why Opera would say, “Added Data Usage view” under “What’s New” in that version???

In any case, we haven’t reported it before so it’s news to us! =p

  7. Opera haa been my only browser since it launched. By far the best. Chrome will have to be great to get me off Opera.
