The recent design trend of smartphones is to keep the display flat, along with the sides and edges of the phone. This is versus phones from a few years ago where curved displays were more trendy. That being said, it seems that Samsung could be considering bringing the curved display back.
This is according to a recently discovered patent that was filed back in June 2024. According to the patent’s drawings, it shows a Samsung phone that has quite noticeable curved displays on its side. In fact, this drawing is rather reminiscent of older Samsung phones like the Galaxy Note series, especially with the S Pen slot at the bottom.
Samsung’s more recent handsets, like the Galaxy S24 series, sport a flatter display and edges. In fact, this design language will continue with the Galaxy S25 series, based on recent leaks. This creates a more streamlined and sharp look. The sharper edges are also more ergonomic to a certain degree. A phone with curved edges could result in accidental touches, even though it might fit nicer in your hand.
That being said, don’t get your hopes up just yet. Companies like Samsung tend to patent a lot of ideas, most of which never really see the light of day. We’ve seen how Samsung had previously patented a phone with a sliding display, although that has yet to be officially announced. But what do you think? Is it time that curved displays make their comeback?
