The CRKD Neo S Frost Edition Packs all the Essentials and a Clean Design

0

As far as gaming accessories go, CRKD is no stranger to the category with its wide array of gaming controllers, such as the super-minimalist Atom and the highly-popular Nitro Deck for the Switch. With that in mind, we recently had the chance to check out the NEO S Frost Edition, an exclusive controller designed for Apple devices such as the iPad and iPhone.

Available at select Apple retail stores (depending on region), the NEO S Frost comes with the essentials, and if you’re interested in picking one up then you might want to check this out first – let’s get started!

Design and Controls

Let’s talk about looks – the NEO S features a minimalist rectangular design which even looks a bit more simpler with the white color as seen on the frost Edition. In terms of ergonomics, some might argue that it’s not going to be the most comfortable controller out there due to its form factor, but it does bring to mind compact handheld systems which likewise have squared-off designs. There’s a bit of contour on the back though which helps with grip.

The NEO S Frost also comes with a full set of controls which include hall effect analog sticks, so there’s a lesser chance of getting drift on your controller. There are also customizable back buttons which can be programmed for different controls on different software. You also have a turbo button, a set of menu buttons, a D-pad, your standard action buttons, as well as shoulder and trigger buttons.

For hardware connectivity, the controller includes a USB-C port for charging, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Usage and Compatibility

In terms of compatibility, the NEO S Frost is going to work nicely with Apple devices like iPhones and iPads, and it’s simply a case of pairing your controller to your device via Bluetooth. Of course it can also work with the Nintendo Switch which is a nice bonus in terms of usability. I managed to use the controller with a couple of games on my iPad (including some emulators), and there’s built-in rumble if your game supports it.

Its lightweight design also means that you can play for long periods without getting strain on your wrists, although the rectangular form factor might mean different levels of comfort depending on how large (or small) your hands are. As for battery, the controller can last around 6 to 8 hours, at least based on my initial usage. Individual gameplay will be different from user to user though, so your mileage may vary.

It can charge via the built-in USB-C port, but there’s also a bundled charging dock which is a nice addition to have.

Final Thoughts

Coming in at around 60 bucks, the CRKD NEO S Frost Edition is similarly to other standard game controllers such as the Switch Pro Controller or the official Xbox controller, for example. Although it does have an advantage with its portability, compatibility with iOS devices, as well as Hall Effect sticks which other controllers (such as Nintendo’s) lack. For Apple device owners looking for a capable gaming controller, the NEO S Frost gets a lot of things right.
