Riding a bicycle is probably one of the more sustainable modes of transportation. It doesn’t consume fuel, it doesn’t use electricity, and you can ride it whenever you want. However, bicycles can be tiring for some, which is why if you’re looking for something that’s still kind of sustainable but has a bit more kick, then the Mooncool TK1 folding electric trike could be for you.
Foldable design
Perhaps one of the more obvious features of the TK1 is that it is foldable. Given that trikes are slightly larger and bulkier compared to traditional bicycles, thanks to the extra wheel, it might be harder to stow away. You can always lean a bike against a wall and it won’t take up too much space, but a trike is a different story.
This is where the foldable design comes in. When you want to put the Mooncool TK1 away, you can just fold up parts of the trike. It makes it more compact so even if you stay in a small apartment, it should still fit nicely in a corner. It also makes it more portable, so if you happen to own a larger vehicle, you might even be able to fit it in.
Now obviously a bicycle would be a lot more compact, but we get it, some people might not know how to ride a bike or prefer the stability that a third wheel provides. The foldable structure ultimately makes the TK1 a great personal mobility device which is not only great for fun, but also accessibility.
Aside from the foldable design, the TK1 comes with an LCD screen mounted onto the handlebars. It’s a simple display that shows your ride metrics and battery life. There are also front and rear baskets that you can use to place your groceries or a backpack, whatever you want.
Powerful motor
The Mooncool TK1 comes with a 500W motor. According to the company, this motor offers peak power of up to 750W and 45Nm of torque. There are five different levels of pedal assist if you need it, or you can always rely 100% on the motor for an easy ride. The TK1 can reach speeds of 16mph, which is honestly not blazing fast.
However, if you’re not a speed demon and just want something that you can get around at a leisurely pace, this is plenty. We should point out that this is a single-speed setup so unlike bicycles which have different gears, there’s nothing for you to shift into.
Built-in safety features
Seeing as how you might take the TK1 on the road, you’ll want to keep yourself safe especially when there are bigger and faster vehicles on the road as well. Mooncool has thought of that and have included several safety features for the TK1.
This includes turn signals that you can use to let other drivers or pedestrians know where you might be turning. This is important not just for cars, but also bikes and trikes. There’s also a built-in horn that will let other people know you’re coming up behind them.
Aside from the turn signals and horn, Mooncool has also included the use of the Star Union hydraulic disc brakes. This is an upgrade over more traditional mechanical disc brakes as it will offer stronger stopping power. This can be useful if you’re on a particularly steep hill and need to stop, or if you need to make an emergency stop.
Since the TK1 is a trike, there is no kickstand unlike a bicycle. To address this, Mooncool has introduced parking brakes that you can access from the handlebars to stop the trike from rolling away.
Removable, long-lasting battery
One of the features of the Mooncool TK1 that we like is that its battery is removable. This means that if you need to juice it up again, you can just remove the battery and charge it by itself. This is versus having to plug the bike in somewhere, which isn’t always very convenient or feasible.
Speaking of battery, the TK1 comes with a built-in 48V*14.5Ah battery. This will allow you to get at least 30 miles on the trike. Keep in mind that the company sells a couple of different models. One is a rear-drive version and the other is a front-drive version. The former should get you 35-70 miles, while the latter will get you 30-45 miles.
Either way, we reckon that’s plenty of range. Unless you plan to use the TK1 as your primary mode of transportation, it should be more than enough range to enjoy over the weekend or to make a trip down to the store. Also, if you prefer to just pedal manually, you can so even if the battery is completely flat, you can still get around.
