Earlier this year, the folks at Fairphone announced that the Fairphone 4 would be getting the Android 14 update. Unfortunately, if you are the owner of the handset, the company has since announced that will no longer be the case, at least for now.
According to a post on the Fairphone forums, the company cited issues that has caused them to delay the roll out of the update. To be clear, the company did not say that they are canceling the update, but rather they are delaying it until the issues can be sorted out. As such, they do not expect the update to arrive by the end of the year.
The post reads, “Unfortunately, we won’t be able to roll out the Android 14 update for Fairphone 4 users just yet. There are some issues we have run into for which we will need Qualcomm’s support on. This is taking a little longer than we anticipated. As it stands, we don’t see the update rolling through in 2024. Hopefully, we should know more by early next year. We’re really sorry about this unexpected development, and we’re working round the clock to get it out as soon as possible.”
This is kind of disappointing and the later part of the paragraph is kind of worrying. Hopefully whatever issue it is can be resolved and the update can be pushed out to the Fairphone 4. Until then, Fairphone 4 users who want the Android 14 update could always turn to custom ROMs if they really have to. Otherwise, just remain patient and hope that 2025 brings better news.
