Wallet apps like Google Wallet are a great way for storing things like cards, especially if you’re not a fan of carrying around a thick wallet. The good news is that if you’re trying to minimize the things with you when you travel, then you might be interested to learn that Google Wallet is testing out support for passports.
With the support for passports, Google Wallet users can scan their physical passport into the app, locate the security chip in their passports, and then submit a video of your face. Google will have to review the video to ensure that you are who you say you are, and if your image in the video matches that of your passport.
Before you get too excited, there are some things you need to take note of. For starters, this only applies to US passports. We assume that based on how well the test goes and also based on local regulations, it could eventually roll out to more countries. Also, not all US airports support digital passports.
This will also only work with domestic flights in the US, so if you’re hoping to travel internationally, you’ll still need to keep your physical passport. That being said, if you do travel frequently within the US for work, this could still come in handy. The feature is still being tested out for those taking part in the beta. Unless you’re enrolled in the Google Play services beta, you won’t see this feature until Google rolls it out to the public.
