Sony Japan Wants to Fight Back Against PS5 Pro Scalpers

0

Following several complaints about scalpers scooping up massive amounts of PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition pre-orders (and subsequently selling their pre-order slots on eBay), Sony Japan has implemented a new system to foil would-be scalpers.

It’s reported that the Japanese PlayStation webpage has limited pre-orders of the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition to users who have a PSN account registered in Japan, with at least 30 hours of PS4 or PS5 runtime on their account between February 2014 to September 19, 2024.

It can be remembered that pre-orders for the limited edition console sold out within minutes in western markets, prompting many users to take to the internet and voice their complaints regarding scalpers.

The PlayStation’s 30th anniversary release was originally announced with a series of specially-themed consoles and accessories that pay homage to Sony’s grandaddy console – this essentially means a color motif in the signature grey look of the OG PlayStation, complete with the tri-color PS logo as well.

Big console launches – and in this case, limited edition runs – are often frequented by scalpers looking to make a quick buck from buyers desperate enough to pay much higher prices for products. Only 12,300 units of the PS5 Pro variant will be available, with a launch scheduled for November 21.
