Perhaps Google was listening after all – following earlier news that Gemini Nano was not arriving for the Pixel 8 (and sparking a bit of outrage among Pixel fans), the Mountain View-based company has now announced that Gemini Nano will in fact be arriving for Pixel 8 users as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop.
As such, the feature will power Google’s “Summarize in Recorder” and “Smart Reply” in Gboard. Google does acknowledge that there was considerable demand for Gemini Nano on the base model Pixel 8, although it did involve quite a bit of testing bringing over the feature. As per a statement from the company:
“We’ve seen a lot of excitement from users and developers since Pixel 8 Pro became the first smartphone to get Gemini Nano last year. Running large language models on phones with different memory specs can deliver different user experiences, so we have been testing and validating this on Pixel 8. We’re excited to provide the opportunity for more enthusiasts and developers to try out Gemini Nano, where we hope to get more feedback and see more innovation.”

With all that being said, this is quite a good move on Google’s part in building back trust with its user base, especially since the company will also be bringing Circle to Search for its older Tensor-powered Pixel handsets. The search feature will arrive for several devices including the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
Going back Gemini Nano, Pixel 8 users will hopefully no longer miss out on a flagship-grade software feature for their devices.
